How do I know which model to choose?
Choosing your rooftop tent is important and depends on several factors: type of vehicle, number of people, type of trip, climate, budget,...
Some of these factors are listed below and we explain what we recommend.
Car type
A rooftop tent can be placed on any type of vehicle except a convertible.
The roof area, roof load and height of the car are important for your choice:
The tent must not exceed the roof area or maximum load.
The height of the roof determines the way the tent can be opened. (With a crank, pneumatic, ...)
.
Number of persons
The number of people and their size is important in determining the size of the opened tent. It is mainly the mattress length that matters here.
Folding tents
Folding tents offer the most space. Their shape also makes them feel spacious and pleasant.
Folding tents have a mattress length of 235cm and widths of 114cm, 132cm, 152cm, 172cm and 212cm.
The Autohome folding tents are slightly smaller with mattress lengths of 200cm and widths of 122cm, 152cm and 172cm
Hard cover tents
Most hard cover tents have a mattress length of 214cm and a width of 132cm
Autohome hardcover tents have a mattress length of 204cm or in optional XL version 224cm. They have 3 widths: 125cm, 140cm or 155cm. (Airlander + XL also available in 175cm.
Below is a small overview of folding tents:
Type of trip
Car camping
For this you can purchase any type of tent. Here especially the dimensions of your vehicle, the number of people and the climate will be the decisive factor.
Expedition
An expedition is a (4x4) trip whose duration and route are predetermined. This allows the right choice depending on the destination and climate. Usually Hardcover tents are chosen for this purpose because they are the quickest to set up. Unless there is not enough free space on the roof....
Overlanding
Overlanding is a long-distance trip where only the departure date is fixed in advance. Because this usually involves travel routes away from civilization in all possible conditions, the requirements for your rooftop tent are the highest. For this we recommend only tents with high quality fabrics and mattresses.
Climate
Cold climate
Contrary to what most people think, it is pleasantly warm inside a rooftop tent quite quickly. This is because there is no contact with the cold ground like in a regular tent. The right blankets or sleeping bags make all the difference here. All rooftop tents both protect against rain, only in prolonged wet areas (Scotland, Iceland,...) you should choose a tent that also dries back quickly.
Warm climate
In a rooftop tent, it is more likely to be too hot than too cold. For warmer climates, choose a tent whose windows and doors are large enough to provide adequate ventilation.
This will make sleeping in warm climates more pleasant anyway.
